The data shows that for most individuals, the menopausal transition does not represent a major risk factor for developing a serious mental health problem. However, for around 20% of women, the rollercoaster of the hormonal fluctuations during the perimenopausal period can increase the risk of developing emotional difficulties due to the hormonal imbalance. A prior history of mental health problems makes the individual more vulnerable to experience a recurrence in depression, anxiety or more severe disorders.
